Hello World
Founder of SilenceAlert
SilenceAlert was founded by Martina, a registered nurse, sociotherapist in forensic psychiatry, and the initiator of this social impact project.
She lives alone, in The Netherlands, with her two cats and does not have daily contact with her social network.
Through both her work in healthcare and her own concerns about her cats, she realized how important it is for someone to notice in time when something is wrong.
At the same time, more and more people are living alone, which can mean it takes longer before someone receives help.
From the question, “How long would it take before my cats are found if something happened to me?” SilenceAlert was born: a simple daily check-in service for people who live alone, but do not want to go unnoticed.
My Story
Living alone — without going unnoticed
I live alone.
That is a conscious choice.
I enjoy peace, my own rhythm, and a life without constant social noise.
But I do not truly live alone.
I share my home with my cats, and they depend on me every single day.
At some point, a thought kept returning that I could no longer ignore:
What if something happens to me at home and nobody notices?
A fall. A medical emergency. Suddenly becoming unwell.
Nobody would notice right away.
And my cats cannot call for help.
A concern many people recognize
Like many people who live alone, I tried to solve it practically.
I made agreements with my daughter and with people close to me:
"If you do not hear from me for a day, please check on me."
But real life is messy.
People are busy. Messages get missed. Routines change.
Not because people do not care — but because everyone has their own life, schedule, and responsibilities.
And nobody wants to constantly monitor loved ones or create unnecessary panic over a missed message.
Why existing solutions did not feel right.
What I discovered was that most existing systems were not designed for people like me.
They are often:
overly medical
highly technical
built around panic buttons or emergency alarms
But what I wanted was something simpler.
Not an alarm.
Just a small daily sign that everything is still okay.
That is how SilenceAlert was born
SilenceAlert started with one simple question:
Who notices when someone living alone suddenly stops responding?
More and more people are living alone.
That brings freedom and independence — but it can also mean it takes longer before someone realizes something is wrong.
SilenceAlert helps prevent that with a simple daily check-in via WhatsApp, email, or phone call.
Every day, users simply confirm that they are okay.
If there is no response, SilenceAlert does not immediately trigger panic or send automated emergency notifications.
That is where we are different.
No automated systems. No ignored notifications.
Many “daily check-in” apps rely entirely on automated systems.
An automated message is sent to a family member or emergency contact — and that is where the process ends.
But notifications are easily missed.
People are at work. Phones are on silent. Messages disappear between dozens of other notifications.
SilenceAlert works differently.
Before contacting an emergency contact, a real person first personally reaches out to the user.
We send reminders.
We actively try to call the user ourselves.
We personally verify whether someone may simply have forgotten to respond.
Only if there is still no contact do we reach out to the emergency contact person.
This human approach helps prevent unnecessary panic while making sure unusual silence is genuinely noticed.
A system designed for real life
With SilenceAlert, users do not have to remember to press an emergency button every day.
Because eventually, people forget.
Life gets busy.
Most systems are reactive.
SilenceAlert is proactive.
We initiate contact every single day.
Users simply respond with a 👍 or short reply to confirm they are okay.
That is it.
Not an alarm button. A daily sign of life.
SilenceAlert is not a medical service and not an emergency alarm device.
In reality, many people are unable to press an alarm button during a sudden medical emergency.
Sometimes the button is not nearby at all.
My own grandmother once left her alarm button on the washing machine while showering. She fell and broke her hip before she could reach it.
SilenceAlert is different.
It is a simple daily check-in service for people who live alone, but do not want to go unnoticed.
Possibly the simplest daily wellness check available worldwide.
No complicated technology.
No separate app required.
No robots pretending to care.
Just a real daily human check-in service.
Peace of mind
For me, SilenceAlert is not about fear.
It is about responsibility — for yourself, and for the pets or loved ones who depend on you.
SilenceAlert brings peace of mind.
For me.
For my daughter.
And for anyone who lives alone, but wants to know that someone will notice if something is wrong.
Without panic.
Without surveillance.
Without constant monitoring.
Just one small message each day.
Because sometimes, one message is enough to say:
I am okay.
